Meet BOY/GIRL: The Photographers Behind the Dreamland Photoshoot
I love the personal connections I’ve made over the years and that I continue to make as a designer. It’s so lovely meeting like-minded, passionate individuals. I have been following BOY/GIRL Photography online for ages, as I love their work and I have a longstanding relationship with the artists, Elizabeth and Jason. The couple make a wonderful team both in work and in life and witnessing them together on my photoshoot prompted me to share their interesting story. I have them to thank for bringing my Dreamland collection to life through their hardwork and amazing talent. It’s truly such a remarkable experience collaborating with other artists and creating something that is so unique but still pertinent to both of your styles.
My brand strategist, Parry, reached out to Jason and Elizabeth for an interview and they were kind enough to spare us some of their time.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR PROFESSIONAL JOURNEY
We met and fell in love, then BOY/GIRL came out of that. We are a force of nature when we are together, always bouncing ideas off each other.
HAVE YOU ALWAYS WORKED IN PHOTOGRAPHY?
We both wanted to be photographers since we were young. Jason was a builder for a bit back in New Zealand, and I used to work in a cocktail bar whilst I was at university...
WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING WITH YOUR SPOUSE?
We both started shooting on our own but we soon realised we work so much better together. It’s a great way to work - not only does someone always have your back, but that person is someone who you trust implicitly and understand totally what they are trying to say.
HOW DID YOU MEET AMANDA?
We have known Amanda for many years, back in her Bermondsey street days. She also made Liz’s wedding dress, so we have a strong personal connection with her. That’s why this job was so special to us.
WHAT DRAWS YOU TO A PROJECT AND WHAT INTERESTED YOU IN WORKING WITH AMANDA ON THIS COLLECTION SHOOT?
We have always loved Amanda and her style, so it was an easy decision. It helped that the collection is just so wonderful - we were excited to work on it and ideas just seemed to fall into place once we saw her designs.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE AMANDA AS A DESIGNER?
Fresh and elegant, whilst being incredibly approachable and thoughtful.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR COLLABORATIVE PROCESS AND HOW YOU WORK.
We like to plan a lot before the shoot. It’s our way of not only giving ourselves more direction on the day, but also really being able to push our ideas with the freedom of being at home. We bounce ideas and references off each other all the time - from walking the dog to just before we go to sleep! It’s really a full time job for us.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PARTS OF YOUR PROFESSION?
Working with such interesting people day to day. It’s a forever changing landscape.
WHAT ARE THE WORST BITS?
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2019?
We plan to keep looking forward. If we achieve that we will be happy. Nothing else matters.
